1997.

California’s New Years Floods were a result of an atmospheric river from December 26, 1996 through January 3, 1997.  Along with heavy snow melt from the rain, it created some devastating flooding. Cache Creek reached a record stage height of 14.4 feet and a record flow of 13,200 cfs. Fortunately, Yolo County’s levees held and only received minimal damage.

IBM’s Deep Blue Supercomputer defeated World Champion Garry Kasparov, the first time a computer beat a reigning chess champion in a match.

NASA’s ‘Pathfinder’ space probe successfully landed on Mars.

The United Kingdom officially transferred Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China, ending 156 years of British Colonial rule.

Scientists in Scotland announced the birth of Dolly the sheep. She is the world’s first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell.

January 14, 1997. Session Minutes.

Following an active discussion debating the pros and cons of income and expenses, cutting the Pastor’s salary to ⅔ or ½ time, Ellen Peckham moved to accept their budget with the Pastor’s salary with manse at ⅔ time. Motion second and carried. A motion will be brought forward during the Congregational meeting to change the Terms of Call from ¾ to ⅔ time.

Elections: Sue Temple moved to elect Jeanne Han as Treasurer, Cindy Brock as Clerk and Bill Rominger as Finance Secretary for 1997. Motion second and carried.

Worship Committee. A Funeral/Memorial leaflet was made available for Session’s approval. Pastor Kathy will not charge for funeral services. The fees for the organist would be set and payable directly to the organist. The committee considered funerals to be an outreach to the community and would not charge a fee for the sanctuary. The social hall rental has a $50.00 fee.


February 2, 1997. Special Session Minutes.

Rev. McIntosh-Smith opened the meeting with prayer. Sue Temple moved that we receive the following people into active membership of Countryside Community Church.  On affirmation of faith:  Frances Graham, Kay Kolb, Mike Kolb, Annette May, Roy May, Marian Williams and Judy York.  Larry Williams and Kelly York by baptism and Gwen Hein through a letter of transfer.

The motion was second and carried. The meeting was adjourned with prayer.

March 11, 1997. Session Minutes.

Pastor’s Report. Pastor Kathy reported the baptism of Lela Rachel Spiva, born February 25, 1996, baptized February 23, 1997. Daughter of Myrna and Joe Spiva.  The wedding of John Michael Hein and Irina Vladislovna in Martinez on March 1, 1997. John is the son of Ed Hein.

Arlie Hurt moved to approve the baptisms for Erica and Nick Schwall and Wyatt Stephens. Motion second and approved.

New Business.  Preschool. The preschool requested additional space upstairs for an office for their computer at an additional  $250 per month. Paul Stephens will negotiate for the use of the additional space for the duration of the year and at contract renewal.

April 8, 1997. Session Minutes. 

Rev. Katherine McIntosh Smith opened the meeting with prayer.

Guests Present: Elizabeth Bradford, Elder and Lew Rooker, Pastor, representatives of the Committee on Ministry.

Discussion on the church’s well-being, its  positive points and challenges. Rev. McIntosh Smith left the meeting.  Session discussed her many gifts. Learned of the options Session has at the end of her designated call: decide not to renew;  renew for another term as designated Pastor;  ask her to become the permanent Pastor.   Session likes and supports the Pastor, would like to pay her more and so she could work more hours   Rev. McIntosh Smith returned to the meeting.

Pastor’s Report.  Pastor Kathy performed the wedding for Cindy Vieu and Jason Bahlman on April 12, 1997, and for Debbie Begley and Scott Blankenship on June 28, 1997.

She will baptize Erica and Nick Schwall and Wyatt Stephens on April 20, 1997.

Building and Grounds. . Arlie reported a new outside water faucet, a new hot water heater, and the need for air conditioner maintenance in the social hall and manse.

On Mother’s Day guest speaker will be Rachel Lausch, a missionary from Guatemala.

October 14, 1997. Session Minutes.  Pastor Kathy opened the meeting with prayer.

Pastor’s Report.  A memorial service for Eva Mae Herbst was held on September 18, 1997.

A wedding for Bonnie Heinmiller and Kenneth Weatherwax on September 20, 1997. Kenneth is the son of Barbara Durst.

A wedding in Kenwood, Sonoma County for Catherine Riek and  James Fletter on October 11, 1997. James is the grandson of Shelford Wyatt.

The new computer has been installed and Bill and Vern are looking for a color printer. The accounting software will be installed by January 1, 1998 for the Treasurer to start the new year.

Liz Schwall reported someone was asking if the church would rent the manse. After a discussion, Bill offered to contact Lawson Management Company. Vern moved to invite someone from Lawson Management to come talk to Session regarding their operation. Motion second and approved.  Pastor Kathy will contact Presbytery regarding our non-profit status and the manse.

November 11, 1997.  Session Minutes.  Guest - Brenda Mahoney, Lawson Management.

Ms. Mahoney explained rental management. Rental for the manse would be $600-$650, there is a 10% applicant screening fee. The house needs to be inspected before going further.

Copy Machine. Pastor Kathy and Bill met with a man from Inland Copy Machines. Options are available for purchasing vs. leasing a copier.  It was decided to wait on purchasing a copier.
