1992.

The 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain had a lot of historical events. More than 9,300 athletes representing 169 countries participated.

In the four years that followed the 1988 Games, the world witnessed important political changes.

Apartheid was abolished in South Africa, which allowed the country to participate in the Olympic Games again, for the first time since 1960. There was also the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of East and West Germany, as well as North and South Yemen.  The Soviet Union was no longer under Communist rule and the USSR was divided into 15 separate countries.

The independent teams of Estonia and Latvia made their first appearance since 1936, and Lithuania sent its first team since 1928. The other ex-Soviet republics participated as a “unified” team, but the winners were honored under the flags of their own republics.

For the first time since 1972, the Games were boycott-free, due to important global political changes.

Men’s basketball became open to all professionals. America’s Basketball “Dream Team” included Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. They dominated the event and won the gold.

Great Britain’s Derek Redman’s tragic injury during the 400m semi-final had the Olympic crowd cheering and a standing ovation as he got up from his hamstring injury and completed the race one painfull step at a time. “I wasn’t going to let the Olympics beat me. I could live with coming in last and being eliminated, but not with not finishing at all.”  “The easiest way to become successful is to just get back up when you have been knocked down. If you get up enough times, you won’t get knocked down any more”.
