1993.

January 20, 1993, William Jefferson Clinton’s first inauguration as our 42nd president and Albert Arnold Gore Jr. became our 45th vice president.

March 12, 1993, Janet Wood Reno was sworn in as the Nation’s first woman  and 78th attorney general.  She went on to become the longest serving attorney general in the 20th century.

August 10, 1993, Ruth Bader Ginsberg was sworn in as an associate justice of the Supreme Court.  She was the second woman and first Jewish woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

January 12, 1993.  Session Minutes.  

Session opened in prayer with Pastor Tammy Letts moderating. Elders present were Mike O’Kane, Ella Haden, Evelyn Pike, and Betty Koeppen.  Evelyn Pike moved to elect Betty Koeppen Clerk of Session. Seconded and carried.  

During the Pastor’s report Tammy proposed a “Get Acquainted” Social. A potluck luncheon on February 7th after church services. It is open to everyone of all ages to come and get acquainted with Tammy and her family.  She is interested in involving the congregation more actively in the worship service. Evelyn will be in charge of finding someone to do the scripture reading every week.

Mike O’Kane reported on the results of the preliminary Pest exam of the Manse. The proposal is $875. Mike will separate the work the congregation can do from what we will need the pest control experts to perform.  Mike will paint the 2 front bedrooms.  Mike reported that the roofer was to start after Christmas, but with the continuous rain, he suggested we let the roof “hold” until spring.

Pastor Letts reported the need to have the Annual Report during the month of January. It was decided to hold the Annual Congregational meeting on January 24th, immediately following worship.   Two elders were nominated for Session February 1993 - January 1996: Joe Haden and Edith Richards. They will be installed during worship before the next Session meeting.

February 9, 1993. Session Minutes.

Woodland-Davis sprayed the manse for termites.

Rev. Tom Letts will preach on Sunday February 14th. Rev. Tom Letts will also assist Tammy with the Ash Wednesday service and the Maundy Thursday service. Rev. Tom’s assistance is an agreement with Pastor Letts and does not require additional compensation from CCC.

A plumbing problem at the manse was taken care of first by Roto-Rooter clearing the sewer line. Replacement of the broken line (tree roots) was taken care of by Mr. Dick Slaugh of the Esparto Community Services District, Mr. Giz Garrison of Garrison’s hardware, and the owner of Cableview Vision. An estimate of work to replace and repair the broken line was given at $250. 

Jeanne Han will write thank-you notes to the gentlemen for their generous and speedy work.

Mike O’Kane reported that the manse is painted, carpeted and plumbed. There was a general agreement to take out the tree and bush whose roots interfered with the sewer line. Electric wires behind the manse need to be checked by PG&E. 

Betty Koeppen reported that the pre-school plans have been cancelled for a start-up for this spring. Annette Miller, our liaison person, recommended CCC be compensated for part of the 1992/1993 year as a show of good faith. The county will have to re-negotiate a contract for the 1993/1994 year if still interested next fall.

A resignation letter was received from Ellen Peckham. Joe Haden moved to accept the resignation with regret. Betty Koeppen will notify her with a letter. Pastor Letts sent a letter to Liz Lehmkuhl asking about her intentions.  Jeanne Han moved to elect Evelyn Pike as elder to the nominating committee. Second and approved. Two congregation members will be asked to serve with her for the rest of 1993. There are 3 openings for the session at this time.

Tammy discussed building security, the possibility of added lighting in the parking lot on the south side of the property.

As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

March 9, 1993. Session Minutes

Pastor’s Report: Tammy performed a  wedding on March 27, 1993 at the church, marrying Jeff Yarbrough and Shelly Sabo. She will perform another wedding out of town on June 6, 1993. Liz Lehmkuhl will submit a letter of resignation to the session. She lives in Vallejo and works in Davis, she is unable to fulfill her obligations. Karen Gist has completed her interviews with Pastor Letts and will be introduced to the congregation March 14th. She is a transfer from the Church of England.  New member classes will start in April after Easter. After a break-in in February, it was decided to tighten up security around the church grounds. A call will be announced to retrieve extra church keys from the congregation and community. The back gate will now be kept locked on a  regular basis.

Betty Koeppen has accepted chairmanship of the 70th Anniversary committee.

A Session Retreat and Training Day was set for Saturday May 1, 1993.

The Congregational meeting was set for March 21 at noon to publish the Budget for 1993 and to elect the Nominating committee.

April 13, 1993. Session Minutes.

Received a letter from Liz Lehmkuhl resigning from Session. Joe Haden moved to accept with regret. Seconded and approved.

Pastor’s Report: Tammy reported on a counseling session that threatened of violence. The subject of security was again brought up. Two suggested recommendations: Pastor Letts try to schedule appointments when other employees are also on the premises. To install a buzzer to ring the manse or office if assistance is needed. Tammy will look into these options. 

Pigeons. The pigeons have come back to roost. Past options were reviewed. Betty will try to screen the attic against nesting and look for other options.

May 11, 1993. Session Minutes.

Clerk’s Report: Clerk reported the death of member William Hayes on April 30, 1993. The baptism of Megan Letts on May 9, 1993, officiated by Pastor Letts’ father, Rev. Bob Mitchell.  The acceptance of Rebecca Letts as a baptized child of our pastor. G-10.0302a. The request of Russell and Linda Mitchell to become inactive as of January 1993 because of a change in residence and becoming active in another church G-10.0302a. Joe Haden moved to accept the report.

Pastor’s Report: Reported that the new member classes are going well, 5 participants. The Wednesday night Bible studies are also going well, averaging 10 persons weekly.  On July 10, 1993, she will marry Medora Rechtfertig and Dave Martin in the church. She officiated at two memorial services, Florence Koeppen (non-member) and William Hayes.  The Food Closet, in partnership with the Yolo County Coalition Against Hunger, services approximately 4-6 requests per month.

Betty Koeppen reported the 70th Anniversary committee will meet May 17th. The tentative date for the anniversary celebration is set for October 3, 1993.

Betty Koeppen will contact R&J Roofing regarding an addendum. It was decided to cancel the portion of the contract where the congregation would furnish the clean up labor for the re-roofing. It was also decided to approach R&J Roofing to see if they would be interested in assisting us in dealing with the pigeons. 

The Yolo County Office of Education, Department of Social Services, is interested in renewing their contract for a State Pre-School, September 1993 - June 1994, $8000/year. It will be a one year lease with a 30 day notice of cancellation for either party. No lunch will be provided and the church will be responsible for daily janitorial service.

Jeanne Han moved to send a communication to the 205th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in support of the Word for whom the Holy Scriptures are the authoritative rule for faith and practice and the vehicle through which God has revealed normative truth for every age. Motion was seconded and approved.

Pentecost Sunday picnic will be May 30th. A children’s worship, honor our Christian Ed teachers and celebrate two new members.

Nominating Committee: Evelyn Pike reported the committee recommends Suzanne Riley for the class of 1994; Paul Stephens, Jr. and Rachel Vieira for the class of 1995. Jeanne moved to accept these recommendations, motion second and approved. Congregation meeting on May 23rd and will be invited to the next Session meeting on June 8, 1993. They will be ordained on June 13th.

Nurture Committee: Jeanne Han reported a meeting held with Billie Howard and Ella Haden.

Christian Education: Tammy reported on a very positive meeting with Rachel Vieira, Laurie Hayes, Donna Pierson, John Pierson, Tom Letts and Tammy Letts.

May 16, 1993. Special Session Meeting.

Pastor Letts opened with prayer. Purpose of the meeting was to interview prospective members of Countryside Community Church.  Prospective members completing new member instruction were: Arlie Hurt, Bernice Hurt, Ginger Rominger. Bill Rominger is inactive and considering active membership again.  After introductions and interviews, Bill and Ginger decided not to follow through with membership at this time.  Jeanne Han moved to accept Arlie Hurt and Bernice Hurt. Motion was seconded and approved. 

May 23, 1993.  Congregational Meeting.

A quorum was noted with 17 members present. Pastor Letts opened with prayer. The purpose was to elect Session members to fill vacancies in the class of 1994 and 1995. The nominees were:  Suzanne Riley Class of 1994; Paul Stephens, Jr. Class of 1995; Rachel Vieira Class of 1995. There were no nominees from the floor. Jeanne moved to elect the three nominees. Motion was seconded and approved unanimously. Ordination and installation will be June 13th.

Pastor Letts called the congregation’s attention to the fact that the monthly operating budget is running in arrears. She challenged everyone to seriously consider their giving and to be consistent.  A special Session meeting is called for May 24th to discuss budget and financial needs.  Evelyn Pike moved to close with prayer.
