2000.

The biggest news story of 2000 was the exceptionally close 2000 United States presidential election and the historic legal battle of George W. Bush and Al Gore that decided the outcome.

Florida’s razor thin vote margin triggered a historic recount. The U.S. Supreme Court halted the recount in December and pronounced Bush the president.

The summer Olympic games took place in Sydney Australia. Michael Phelps,15 years old, was the youngest male U.S. Olympic swimmer in 68 years, competing in the 200-meter butterfly and finished in fifth place. Between 2004-2016 he would claim 23 gold medals, the most of any athlete in Olympic history.

NASA astronaut Commander Bill Shephard, Russian cosmonauts Flight Engineer Sergei Krikalev and Soyuz Commander Yuri Gidzenko blasted off from Kazakhstan on October 31, 2000 aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft for the International Space Station to live and work for 136 days. They returned to Earth in March 2001. This event was the beginning of an uninterrupted continuous human presence in low Earth orbit that continues to this day.

A motion was made by Ellen Peckham to appoint Jim Durst , Bill Rominger and Carol Means to constitute as Interim Pastor nominating committee. Motion was carried.

Discussion and review was held on the salary package and job description for the Interim Pastor. Motion was made and carried.

They briefly review four possible candidates for Interim Pastor.

Clerk’s Report: A letter from Pioneer Presbyterian Church in Winters regarding their interest in a possible yoke with Countryside Community Church. Topic was tabled until the next meeting and was referred to the Pastor Nominating Committee.

Moderator’s Report: A funeral for Ellen Tandy on March 18, 2000, a longtime member in good standing of this church.

There are five prospective new church members: Nancy Holcomb, Deb Jensen, Mary Cornwell, Heidi Hopper and Ken Hopper. Sunday, April 16 will be a special session meeting to meet with the prospective members.

Mission: The Clothes Closet requested to use more space in the basement for clothes. It was decided to allow them to use the extra space. It will be open one evening a week for working families.

Memorials and Stewardship: Sixteen memorials were received in March. The new balance is 4111.46. A quote has been received and another is forthcoming for a new sound system for the church. The committee will report back at the next meeting. 

Nurture : A proposal to reissue the 1950 Recipe Book the Countryside Community Church women published with the funds going to the Women’s Auxiliary. The Nurture Committee is in charge.

April 6, 2000. Special Session Minutes.

The meeting was called for the acceptance of prospective new members into the congregation of Countryside Community Church.

George moved to accept Ken Hopper, Heidi Hopper, Mary Cornwell, and Nancy Holcomb by Reaffirmation of Faith, and Deb Jensen by letter of transfer from the Episcopol Church, into membership of Countryside Community Church. Bill second the motion and it was approved.

Meeting adjourned.

May 11, 2000. Session Minutes.

A motion was made to contact the Session of Pioneer Presbyterian Church  and arrange a meeting to explore and gather information regarding their interest in yoking the two churches. Motion carried. The Clerk will send a letter to their Clerk inviting their Session to meet on June 8th and to bring their Pastor and their agenda.

June 8, 2000. Session Minutes.

Visitors: Arriving at the end of the business meeting, Elders from Pioneer Presbyterian Church

Clerk Shirley Westmoreland and six Elders from Pioneer Presbyterian Church of Winters California joined the meeting to discuss the yoking of our two churches. After discussion it was decided to pursue further talks about yoking the churches. The next meeting would be August 17th at Pioneer Presbyterian, confirming in July.

There was no further business and the meeting closed with prayer.   

August 13, 2000. Session Minutes.

The August 17th meeting with Pioneer Presbyterian Church was postponed.

Buildings and Grounds: A report of several break-ins at the church recently triggered a discussion on security. Considering window locks, an alarm system and all new keys.

Bill will check on the cost of an alarm system.

A bid for a new sound system was received from Skip’s Music. A bid was received from Bud for $7,104.30. After some discussion regarding church repairs, it was decided to table until next month to allow for security repairs. 

September 10, 2000. Session Minutes. 

Mission: Liz reported that the food bank is for emergency purposes only and is not supposed to be used by individuals on a regular basis. 

Old Business: Bill reported that there are now locks on windows. An alarm system company has been contacted and suggested a decision on a sound system should be made. 

Roy moved and George second to purchase a sound system from Skip’s Music with funds of $3,500 from the Memorial Fund and $5,000 borrowed from the general fund. Motion carried.

Bill will give a letter to the congregation concerning the purchase of the sound system.

November 19, 2000. Session Minutes.

Bill reported that the new sound system is doing fine.

There is still a problem with kids causing problems on church property.  Another lock is needed on the back gate. The custodian gave notice of her leaving. Carol moved that the Building & Grounds committee go ahead and hire a new custodian. Motion second and approved.

Cable Dave and friends helped fix the security lights. The Clerk will send thank you notes.
